If you’re looking to prioritise self care this year, practising mindfulness is a great place to start. Mindfulness (the ability to be fully present and engaged in the moment) is shown to improve your mental and physical wellbeing, and greatly contribute to your quality of life.
With this being said - how exactly can we incorporate mindfulness into our (often busy!) lives? From journaling to meditation, read on as we share 5 simple ways to practise mindfulness in 2023.
Set Your Intentions
The start of the new year is the perfect time to set some goals and intentions for yourself. Having clear goals will encourage you to stay focused and motivated throughout the year, and encourage you to be mindful as you strive to achieve them.

Practice Meditation
Meditation is one of the best ways to improve mindfulness as it forces you to stop and be fully present in the moment. You don’t need to commit to a 30-minute meditation each day - it can be as little as 5 minutes when you wake up in the morning, or before you go to sleep.
You may like to meditate in silence, use affirmations, or listen to a guided meditation. The most important thing is to focus on your breathing, pay attention to your body, and observe any wandering thoughts as they drift through your mind. You can enhance your meditation practice even further by holding your favourite crystal, or diffusing essential oils to create a serene environment.
Keep a Journal
Regular journaling is another way to stay present and mindful throughout the year. When it comes to journaling, there are no rules - you can choose a journaling practice that feels right for you.
For example:
- Write down 3 things you’re grateful for each day
- Reflect on your day - how did you feel, what did you accomplish, what lessons did you learn?
- Set goals and document your progress
- Write positive affirmations for yourself

Focus On Your Breathing
It sounds simple, but try to find opportunities during the day to stop and focus on your breathing. For example - when you’re stopped at a traffic light, when you’re taking public transport, or before falling asleep in bed. Taking moments throughout the day to be truly present will help you become more aware of your mind and body.
Reduce Your Screen Time
Finally, considering being more mindful with your screen time, instead of mindlessly scrolling social media. While you don’t need to completely unplug, it can be helpful to implement some time limits and be more intentional about what you’re consuming.
